My contract with Tiscali expired recently and was looking at an alternative. All the service providers were offering bundle offers with TV and Phone. In a confused state, I came across this forum www.ukbroadbandforum.co.uk.

Notebooks distribution to 1st-8th standard student (Cost: 10K)

Ooratchi Onriya Nadu Nilai Palli (Govt. School), Sendrampalayam,Kinathukadavu.

Sendrampalayam is a village, located near Thamaraikulam which is on the pollachi-coimbatore main road. 25 kms from coimbatore and 15 kms from pollachi. The Govt school here teaches till 8th standard.

Initially we thought to select the students who are poor and provide them notebooks.
But in that area 80% of the students are poor. So there is no point in differentiating between the students. So, we got the list of notebooks needed for the students from the HM of the school. We approached the press which makes the notebooks for the students. He provided us with the discounted price.The cost worked out to be ~34k.

Since the amount was more, We took out the long size notes and few others from the list.(1 long size note is Rs. 20 and ~1000 were requested). Finally gave the order for the remaining notebooks. The cost worked out to be ~10K.

Note books were distributed to students.

Unlocking IPhone 2G with 3.0 OS!

Its time to explore the possibilities of unlocking IPhone with 3.0 OS. Like always, I managed to find an article in the net about unlocking the 2G phone with 3.0 OS. Please note not all the features advertised in the Apple site will work on IPhone 2G. Few of the features are exclusive to IPhone 3G and IPhone 3GS phones.

The minimum requirement for unlocking iPhone 2G are as follows:

* Itunes 8.2
* redsnow - Search for redsnow 0.7 Version in Google.

1) Store all the files under one Folder - IPhone3.0
2) Connect your IPhone to ITunes and hold down the shift key by selecting IPhone displayed on your left and then click restore button.
3) Be cautious to choose only Automatically sync when this phone is connected.
4) Now select the .ipsw file already downloaded from the Iphone3.0 folder.
5) After the firmware update in ITunes is completed, Launch the redsnow application from the Iphone3.0 Folder.
6) Click browse, then navigate to the .ipsw file which we used for restoring the iphone.
7) Make sure the message " IPSW successfully identified" is displayed on the window, then click next.
8) Select " Install cydia" and " Unlock" and press Next.
9) Then Browse for the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader from the IPhone3.0 folder and press Next.
10) Now plug your Iphone into the computer and make sure it is OFF and then click Next. Don't worry if the IPhone is already connected during the process.
11) Please follow the instructions clearly and take great care to do the process as instructed on the screen.
12) The Iphone will reboot in between and will show "Done" on the window, then click Finish.
13) Now the iphone will run a few programs and hopefully your iphone will be unlocked and Jail broken.

IPhone - Restoring Address Book

After using IPhone for more than an year, It was only yesterday I tried to restore the address book while upgrading the firmware to OS 3.0.

Using an application(Diskaid), I was able to connect to my IPhone from my laptop( Windows Vista). Then transferred the files from the address book directory -~/users/library/AddressBook to my Laptop under Root folder.

After upgrading my IPhone to 3.0 OS, I connected it to my laptop and using the same software,copied the backed up files into the address book and everything worked fine.

Basic requirements for this to work is the IPhone needs to be unlocked. The files that needs to be backed up are :

* AddressBook.sqlitedb
* AddressBookImages.sqlitedb

IPhone 3.0 OS Released - 17 June 2009 !

Iphone 3.0 OS was released yesterday and few of the useful features are listed for your reference:

App sharing on IPhone!

Finally some good news for IPhone users. The apple developers and hackers have revealed a new feature on IPhone 3.0 OS. The feature was a secret until now,which allows App sharing between the IPhone users. The Initial comments from experts indicate this will allow one person to buy an application and share it with others.

Normally IPhone users download the new Apps depending on the reviews integrated with each App. What if those people who use the app which was shared by another user try to make a comment on the App? Will that increase sales or decrease sales? Well,Apple have another feature to overcome this issue by adding an verification process to identify if you are the owner of the App and allow only the owners to write a review on a particular App.

The transfer mode still remains a million dollar question with Bluetooth being the preferred mode.

Will Bing replace Google?

Bing! The new search engine is launched by Microsoft as a possible replacement for Google. Microsoft live search will be replaced by Bing from Wednesday, 3rd June 2009.Bing updates its homepage daily with a beautiful screenshot which is more attractive than the normal white Google homepage. It also allows you to know the details about the screenshot( place) by moving the mouse over the picture.

Coming to the main feature, Bing does provide a detailed search result with mouse over the links on the search results as shown on the picture below. Bing also provides the features of Video and Image searching but have to wait and see how accurate it is when compared to Google.

According to experts review , Bing is a robust search engine. Are you thinking of whether Bing will replace Google in future? Well wait for few months and see if your neighbours,friends are using Bing , if so then it has already replaced Google.

As you all know, Protocol is a standard set of rules that can be interpreted as the point of control for any connection,communication or data transfer between any computing endpoints.Most of us who are well known with the protocol, might not be aware of Protocolunknown error.

Files with Extension PTX

Another common file extension interpreted as error are the files with .ptx extension. The File extension ptx cannot exist nor work individually without other associated files.

File extension ptx provides more information on .ptx files. These files are actually created by other executable while installing.

FireFox - Design Challenge Summer 09

Do you remember why people started using FireFox more than Internet explorer? If not its the Tab option in the browser which prompted a lot of users to use FireFox browsers. The Tabs in the browser was a huge success and all the other browsers developers started to include with their browsers and Microsoft was the last to implement the tabs in Internet explorer 7.0 if I remember correctly.

I know what you are thinking, why am I mentioning about this after these many years? The reason ,FireFox is planning to exclude the tabs option in its next release and is having a competition for us to give out an alternatives to the tabs we are using. They are calling it as " Design challenge summer 09" and the question is as follows :
"Reinventing Tabs in the Browser - How can we create, navigate and manage multiple web sites within the same browser instance?"

To be honest,I am more than satisfied with the Tabs but if any of you who read this post have any innovative ideas then please do participate in FireFox's challenge.

File with Extension DOT

Continuing with the file extension details on my earlier posts, the next in the queue are files with extension DOT. Every one should have come across this particular type of file extension in your life.Can't remember where you have seen this, this is associated with Microsoft word.

File Extension DOT are used as template files for creating documents until Windows 2003 version and until Word for MAc 2004. This files were replaced with DOTM files from Windows 2007. DOT is the acronym of Document Template. The Microsoft Word icons will not be displayed for this .DOT files in Word as they are just templates and can't be opened in Microsoft word.

Imeem on IPhone

Good news for Imeem users,Imeem app is available for IPhone and Ipod touch users and is free to download from App store.

I downloaded this app yesterday and installed it.The following are the options displayed by default under featured:

* Spotlight( New and Notable artists)
* Top 100 ( This weeks hottest songs on Imeem)
* Urb's Next 100( 100 new artists blowing up in 2009)
* songs from Apple Ads( the apple of your Ear)

Apart from Featured, My music and Favorites are the other options available on Imeem Application. If you are selecting any of the options listed under Featured Tab, then you need Wifi connection or GPRS connection for streaming.

Using my music you can create your own play list with the songs stored on your IPhone. As I haven't used Imeem before not sure if there are more options to try out.

Rumour : Third(3rd) Generation IPhone

Its time for latest information on Third genration IPhone. Do you want to know the features on the " 3rd generation IPhone"? The following are the features :

* 3.5 inch, 480 x 320 (same as earlier models)
* 600 MHZ processor (replacing 400 MHZ)
* 256 MB (Twice as much as earlier)
* 3.2 Mega pixels( 2.0 Mp earlier)
* More storage capacity( Not yet confirmed)

People are expecting more from Apple on this 3rd generation on gaming direction. Apple advertised few days back the Apps will be a killer feature of current generation devices.

Still a rumour, Have to wait till June to see what actually Apple has come out with. Most Apple Fans will be disappointed if they IPhone doesn't have a GPU and a better touchscreen help gaming.

File with Extension WPD

All the files used in a computer has an extension which refer to the encoding algorithm or convention of its content. One such file extension is .wpd file. Generally these are a special type of audio file associated with wav files.

File extension Wpd is one of the site providing information regarding the .Wpd file. Normally they reside inside a folder which contains .wav files as this can't work independently nor can be opened independently.

In File Extension wpd, you will find information regarding Saw studio which is a sound processing software can be helpful to open the .wpd file. The .wpd file contains miscellaneous information like signal frequency and intensity associated with a .wav file. Saw studio shall be used to open the .wpd along with a .wav file associated with it.

Windows7 - Microsoft announcement

From May 5th 2009, Microsoft allowed general public to download Windows7 Release candidate and try it on their computers. Microsoft will gather information from our PC's to fix few bugs on the release candidate. Windows7 is scheduled to be released 23rd October as per the latest information.This release candidate will work till March 2010 without any problems and interruptions from Microsoft with regular updating of the windows updates. After March 2010, Microsoft will send the notification to all the Release candidate users to upgrade/buy a licensed version of Windows7 and will restart your PC automatically every 2 hours or on a particular time decided by Microsoft and on June 1st 2010, the license of Windows7 Release candidate will expire and will stop working.

Files with DNL extension

Haven't heard it until last week. I happened to receive a file from one of my friend with a .dnl extension and In spite of having Vista OS and a lot of software's on my Laptop, I was unable to open this file.

While browsing the internet for information regarding the .dnl extension,came across File Extension DNL. Before reaching this,a lot of sites on Google search resulted in a website displaying "Please click here to run a scan to fix the .dnl error"

After reading through the description on File Extension DNL site which I was redirected to,it looks like its one of the file created by software desktop author in the form of ebooks,ecards,ecatalogs and ebrouchers.These files could be opened using the Desktop author software which is available for free.

Windows7 release canditate - 5 May 09

Microsoft announced this week about the availability of Windows7 release candidate for public access from May 5th 2009. It is already available for download for MSDN account holders and Technet subsrcibers. Microsoft will be gathering information from users PCs to fix few bugs identified during the first deployment. Microsoft also claims that windows7 is reliable,secured,improved management and performance.So far,most of the feedback received from the Windows7 Beta users are positive and we expect the same from the May release which should be far better than Vista. Microsoft reiterated this release is not a final release.

Kyocera Foldable OLED concept phone

With the increase of lot of touchscreen phones and larger display phones, Designers were breaking their heads to come out with a solution to have larger display but a compact phone. Well,there is an answer, Kyocera has displayed its OLED foldable display concept phone at CTIA. The concept phone has a large bright display with wide screen OLED display which can be folded back to the size of a wallet. It has two modes:

* Qwerty mode for text entry
* Wide screen display made for browsing and for media applications.

Buzz! OLED display is going to be the next biggest technology in smaller laptops and cellphones in the future as the display consumes less power, available miniaturising option and less battery consumption.

MasterCard's "ATM Hunter" - App for Iphone

Here you go, Another IPhone App was released this week by MasterCard worldwide " ATM Hunter".This App allows you to find the nearest ATM from your location. IPhone 3G uses GPS facility to identify the location while the IPhone 2G requires an Internet connection. In addition to it, the user has to enter the address or specific location on IPhone 2G and the search will be carried out based on the Input.

ATM hunter not only displays the nearest ATM but also provides the details such as Bank name which avoid users paying for potential charges applied by other banks ATM. It also provides with following information

* 24 HR service?
* Wheel chair accessibility present?
* Surcharge free?
* Deposit sharing?

Looks like a cool App for frequent travellers when they are short of money.

icloud - World's first online computer

icloud is a website that turns your web browser into an online computer giving access to your files and applications that you regularly use. icloud has introduced it's beta version this week and looks like already captured the market( you can see the usual notification :-) " Heavy server load".

Basically you need to create an account with icloud and you will be given access to secure storage space of 3GB where you can store all your files which you may require to share with your friends and those who need the files elsewhere in the world. Few applications pre installed for every account are

* Mail
* Instant Messaging
* Photo organizer
* File explorer
* Music & Video player
* Write
* Calendar
* Contacts
* Games

The storage screen shall be configured like a webdav folder as in the picture and will be easy to transfer files.

icloud allows you to even share photos and music and reduce the complexity in sending a large attachment through mail. It also provides few application development tools like

* API documentation
* XML Editor

A week later Skype released its version for IPhone,Yahoo has also come up with their IPhone version. Yahoo messenger app will be available in Itunes App store for free download. This allows the users to update the status,share photos,emoticons and links on IPhone. This version is compatible for Iphone as well as for Ipod Touch with at least 2.0 software installed on it.Additionally you can also send SMS to your friends through Yahoo IM. After seeing the release of Yahoo,SKype for IPhone ,IPhone users are expecting Microsoft to soon release their MSN Version for IPhone.

VNC lite for IPhone - Control Your PC with IPhone from anywhere!

Few months back tightvnc application was available for jail broken IPhone users restricting the control only to mouse pointer i.e. control of your PC by moving the mouse pointer using IPhone screen. Those days are gone now,I happened to come across VNC lite on App store which is available as free download. VNC lite allows not only to control your PC but also to view your desktop through IPhone using wifi connection.

1. For connecting your IPhone to your PC you just need one of the VNC server application running on your PC (VNC,tightVNC etc.).
2. Make a note of the VNC server ip address and set your won password.
3. Run the VNC lite app on your IPhone and press connect on your right hand corner of the application.
4. Enter the ip address of the VNC server running on your PC and password and then press connect.
5. On your PC , a screen will appear allowing you to accept the incoming connection or reject. Press Accept and you will be connected to the Desktop.

I have tried this on my IPhone and it worked.(IPhone2G)

IPhone SDK terms updated for developers

Apple is facing a huge threat from their rival "Cydia" who are releasing a lot of Apps before they are available in App store. The secret behind most of the apps available in cydia are either rejected apps by Apple or developers who don't want to go through Apple. This has forced Apple to change their IPhone SDK terms which restrict the developers to develop only for Apple and sign the updated terms. The updated terms :

"Applications developed using the Apple Software may only be distributed if selected by Apple (in its sole discretion) for distribution via the App Store or for limited distribution on Registered Devices (ad hoc distribution) as contemplated in this Agreement"

Apple are now entitled to take legal actions against developers bypassing Apple and build the business through releasing apps to competitors like Cydia. Sure, SDK developers will have an alternative for Apples Terms.

Rumour: Better camera in the next IPhone Version

Latest rumour floating around the world "Apple's release of next version of IPhone". It will be having a 3.2MP camera with 3.2MP CMOS sensor from omnivision. With this we expect the capabilities of camera to improve and utilised properly for the first time in IPhone. Another rumour linked with the IPhone camera is apple are in talk to include a 5 MP CMOS sensor. Apple has not officially advertised this feature nor they have declined the statements. Just days before,Apple announced its 3.0 software.Is apple planning to release the next IPhone? What would they call it? IPhone 4G ,5G?Any guesses ?

Quickoffice for IPhone

Microsoft has revealed its plan to bring office onto the IPhone and also Quickoffice has announced its plan to release quickoffice for IPhone in early April. Quickoffice will be capable of editing word and Excel documents.It will also have the capability of transfering files from PC to IPhone and the file types include Pdf,iWork, powerpoint and pictures. Quickoffice will not be available for free but options will be available for downloading Quickword or Quickexcel seperately on different rates depending upon individual's requirement.

IPhone 3.0 Jailbreaking !!??

Confused after reading my earlier post !

How can IPhone 3.0 software be jail broken when it is not released yet? Well, the iPhone developers are proactive and work has started on 3.0 Beta version released earlier this week(17th March 2009). The Developer's first verdict "Any Device running 3.0 software can be Jail broken" but have already warned 3G users to be careful with the Beta version if they have already jailbroken. Keep in mind, Apple have claimed this software SDK will be more helpful/useful for Developers to create new applications.

IPhone 3.0 Features or Fake IPhone 3.0?

IPhone 3.0 official release date is not yet finalised and to be announced imminently. Are you one among those freak who can't wait to try out the IPhone 3.0 features? There is an alternate solution and it's known as "FAKE THE IPHONE 3.0". Being an IPhone user for quite sometime, I would like to try my hands on this. Microsoft have released Service pack 2 for Windows Vista without much noise. Unlike Windows 7 Beta download, it is not required to log in to Microsoft site to download the service pack. The service pack is currently available in 5 languages which includes English,French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Windows server 2008 SP2 is also available along with Vista SP2 as a single standalone installer.

Google Mail service is down !!

Google Mail service went down yesterday for some reason in majority of UK for an unknown reason. This affected a lot of corporate people who are using it for official purpose in order to reduce cost for running their own mail servers.Google reported that they are working on this issue giving the highest priority to it and following were the words published by Google on their Gmail support site.

"We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1.30AM Pacific Time. We're working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused".

MxTube is an application available from cydia source on Iphone that allows you to download the video from YouTube or even stream from YouTube. MxTube will be available for those who have unlocked/jailbroke their IPhone with Cydia source installed on it. MxTube allows you to search for a video and display the following options

Gmail adds Location to your signature

Within a few days of Latitude's release, Google has introduced the feature of adding your location automatically to your signature. To use this feature follow the procedure below:

* Go to Labs tab under settings, Enable the option "location in signature " and save changes

* Go to GMail signature preferences and select "Append your Location to the signature".

It works like a charm!

Gmail labs - Multiple Inboxes from Google

Yet another feature released by Google on Feb 5th from the Labs. This latest features allows to you to have multiple Inboxes categorised into regular unclassified mails, Starred mails,Labelled mails and Drafts. Each category is displayed in different panels and Google allows you to adjust the position to the right, left or below the main panel.This reduces time in browsing through the whole lot of mails in search of a particular mail.As we all know Google allows Employees 20% of their time to be worked on Personal project and here is the result put forward by a Google Employee as his personal Project.

AroundMe on IPhone 2.2.x

AroundMe helps you to find out the information about your surroundings. AroundMe is an excellent application for travellers. This is a free application available on the AppStore. You need a wireless connection or a Edge connectivity(GPRS) on your IPhone to use this application. As soon as you launch the application, a list of options will be available such as Restaurant,Bars, Hospitals and Hotels. Select what you are looking for and AroundMe displays the places you requested for with the Address,Phone numbers,Map and many more. I am sure no one would like to use one option for sure, the option to know nearby Apple Stores :-)

Unlocking iPhone(iphone2G) and upgrading with 2.2.1 firmware

Found these instructions while browsing and it works great!

Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop.

Download the following files and place them in the Pwnage folder you just created:

Extract the QuickPwn-225-2.zip file to the Pwnage folder.

Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 2.2.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Open button to continue.

Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the 2.2.1 firmware you may launch QuickPwn.exe from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

Make sure you iPhone is connected to the computer and click the blue arrow to continue.Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone firmware.

Select the 2.2.1 firmware ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop then click the Open button.

QuickPwn will check to make sure the ipsw is valid. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, Replace Boot Logos, and Unlock Phone. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the blue arrow button.

You will now be asked to select your bootloader files. Click the Browse button and select the 3.9 bootloader from the Pwnage folder on your desktop. Likewise do the same thing for the 4.6 bootloader file. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone is connected via USB before continuing. Click the blue arrow button to proceed.

QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.Watch the prompts carefully and follow along.

Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreak process.

Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it was successfull. Your iPhone will then proceed to run BootNeuter. This process will take about 5 minutes. Please be patient. Your iPhone will reboot when it has completed the process successfully!

VLC Player for iPhone - Ver 1.9.0

As expected the development team have release the new version for VLC player soon after the release of Mplayer's update. Though there is an improvement in this version of the player, the video display size remains the same disappointing a lot of people. The video is displayed only on the top half of the screen and impossible to view it in fullscreen. The new update is available on cydia source if anyone wants to try their hands on.

Mplayer for iPhone Ver 2009.01.02-1 - The Improved Version !!

I happened to see the newer version of Mplayer a couple of weeks ago. As the older version was at its testing stages it had a lot of issues as mentioned in my previous post. The newer version seems to be much improved and a bits stable than the older verions. The Skip Forward, Skip backward works in this version without much of a delay and even the movie can be played at any point by dragging the marker which wasn't working in its earlier version.This update can be downloaded from cydia source.

Measurement Labs(M-Lab)

Measurement labs has been launched by google for auditing the broadband speed at your home.Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is an open platform for researchers to deploy Internet measurement tools. By this way Google is expecting to enhance Internet transparency and to help sustain a healthy and innovative Internet. This in Beta stage now.

I tried this tool a couple of times and was not successful with all the tools available as the servers were down. But did manage to test the BitTorrent analyser Glasnost and the analysis was quite useful. This tool is to test whether BitTorrent is being blocked or throttled through the ISP or network administrator.

Google Latitude

Google Latitude is a tracking software by which you can track your friends or your employees via google Maps. The software will be available for most of the smartphones,mobiles,blackberries including the Apple iPhone. This new feature has been launched by Google today and it allows users to find the approximate location of their friends and families if they have opted to share the location details with the users. Latitude also provides the ability of SMS,google talk or Gmail or to update users status and also allows to even upload a new profile photo.
